Scratch Patch is a place where the floor is covered in thousands of tumbled-polished gemstones. The idea is for you to scratch around to find your favourite stone.
The first patch was opened in Simon's Town in the early 70's.
Since then another one has opened at the V&A Waterfront.

Tumbled-polished means that the stones are slowly tumbled and ground together in a barrel like tumbler. This can take up to weeks to get the right "shine".Typical South African stones that can be found are Tiger’s Eye, Rose Quartz, Amethyst and Jasper.
The Topstone factory shop offer anything and everything to do with Gemstones. Here you will find from inexpensive gifts and jewellery to fashionable gold and silver items and faceted stones.
You buy a container and then you can pick any stone that you want, till you have filled the container.
Yes, kids love to scratch for their favourite gemstones but adults love it just as much!
